Studio Nine Lab.

The notch, made useful.

Matte turns the black strip at the top of your MacBook into a bar of widgets. Claude Code approvals, what’s playing, your next meeting, a place to drop files. Open it when you need it. It tucks away when you don’t.

Three steps, then forget it’s there.

  1. Install Matte Home

Sign up with your email and we send a download link and an activation code. Home is the bar itself, plus the top row: Settings, Launchpad, volume, brightness and the theme switch.

  2. Choose what goes in the bar

Tick the widgets you want when you sign up and they’re ready on first launch. Add or remove more from the Library inside the app whenever you like.

  3. Drag it into shape

Hold a widget to move it, pull an edge to resize it. The bar grows to fit, holds as many widgets as you like, and remembers the layout.

Matte Home. Everyone starts here.

SettingsLaunchpadVolumeBrightnessTheme

Home is Matte itself: the bar that lives around your MacBook’s notch, and the top row everyone gets. Settings, Launchpad, volume, brightness and the light/dark switch sit there from the first launch. Widgets go in the row below, and you choose which ones.

Expands to fit

The bar grows sideways as you add widgets and tucks back behind the notch when you move away.

As many widgets as you like

No cap and no tiers. Add one, add twenty. Each one only runs while it’s in the bar.

Drag to reorder

Hold a widget and move it. Pull its edge to make it wider or narrower. Matte remembers the layout.

Add and remove in the Library

Every widget is in the in-app Library. One click adds it, one click takes it away.

macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Best on a MacBook with a notch, and it works on any Mac display.

35 widgets, all of them free.

Runs on your Mac. Right there in the notch.

The widgets do their work on your Mac: your music, files, calendar and Claude sessions are handled where they already live. No upload site, no extra cloud account to set up.

Questions, answered.

What is Matte?

A small Mac app that turns the notch at the top of your MacBook screen into a bar of widgets. Hover or click the notch and it opens; move away and it tucks back in.

Which Macs does it run on?

macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Best on a MacBook with a notch, and it works on any Mac display. On a Mac without a notch, the bar sits at the top centre of the screen in the same way.

Is it really free?

Yes. Home and every widget in the Library are free while we build Matte in the open. You can use your code on up to 3 Macs.

Why do you need my email?

Your activation code is sent there, so it has to be a real address you can open. We use it for your code and for important updates about Matte. Anything else only if you tick the box.

Can I change my widgets later?

Any time. The Library inside Matte lists every widget. Add one with a click, remove it with a click, and drag to rearrange the bar.

I lost my code. What now?

Ask for a new one on the resend page. A fresh code is emailed straight away and the old one stops working.

Where’s the small print?

In plain English: the Terms at lab.studionine.agency/matte/terms and the Privacy policy at lab.studionine.agency/matte/privacy.

Who makes it?

Studio Nine, a small creative studio in the UK. Matte started as a tool we built for ourselves and is now one of the things we make in the Lab.
