The deal

These terms are between you and Studio Nine (Nine Marketing Studios Ltd., trading as Studio Nine), who make Matte in the Lab. By signing up for or using Matte, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use Matte.

Our Privacy policy explains what data Matte collects and why.

What you can do with Matte

We give you a personal, non-exclusive licence to install and use Matte on up to 3 Macs that you own or control. You can use it for personal things and for your work, including paid work.

You sign up with your email and we send a download link and an activation code. One sign-up covers up to 3 Macs. Codes work for 14 days, and you can ask for a new one any time; a Mac that’s activated stays activated. If you change Macs and hit the limit, email hello@studionine.agency and we’ll free up a slot.

Please don’t copy, resell, rent out or redistribute Matte, take it apart to get at its code (except where the law lets you), or get around the device limit or the account checks.

Your account and code

Your account and activation code are personal to you. Please don’t share them or post them anywhere. You’re responsible for what happens on your account, so if you think someone else has your code, get a new one from the resend page and tell us.

Please give us a real email address. It’s where your code, updates and important notices go.

What it costs

Matte is free for now. We may bring in paid plans or paid widgets later. If we do, anyone using Matte for free will hear from us by email before anything changes, and nothing you’re using will start charging you without you choosing to pay.

Widgets and Claude Code

Matte’s widgets do their work on your Mac. Some of them act on things for you, like converting or sending a file you drop on Mappy, or controlling your music. Some ask for macOS permissions, like your calendar or camera, the first time you use them.

The Claude Code widget shows requests from Claude Code sessions on your Mac and lets you approve or deny them from the notch. You’re responsible for what you approve, the same as if you’d approved it in Claude Code itself. Read a request before you say yes. Claude Code is made by Anthropic, under Anthropic’s own terms, and isn’t part of Matte.

Daily brief, Summarise clipboard, Translate (on macOS 14) and Mappy Drop’s Ask Claude also run through Claude Code. They need Claude Code installed and signed in to your own Claude account, and what they do counts towards your own Claude usage.

Some widgets rely on other apps or services, like Apple Music, Spotify, your calendar or a weather service. Those work under their own terms, and we can’t promise they’ll always be available.

Using it fairly

Please don’t use Matte to break the law, to harm anyone, or to try to break, overload or get unauthorised access to our systems. If an account is used that way, or to get around the device limit, we may suspend or close it. Where we can, we’ll tell you why first.

As it is

Matte is a free beta. It isn’t notarised by Apple yet, so macOS asks you to confirm it the first time you open it (see Installing Matte). We make it carefully and use it every day ourselves, but it’s provided as it is. We can’t promise it will always work perfectly, be free of bugs, or work with every Mac and every version of macOS. We may change, add or remove widgets and features.

As far as UK law allows, we aren’t responsible for indirect losses, lost data, lost profits or lost business from using Matte. Nothing in these terms limits anything the law doesn’t allow us to limit, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud, or your rights as a consumer.

Stopping

You can stop using Matte at any time. If you installed the Claude Code hooks, remove them first in Matte’s Settings › Claude Code, then quit Matte and move it to the Bin. To close your account and have your data deleted, email hello@studionine.agency.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as Matte grows. If a change matters, we’ll email you before it takes effect and update the date at the top of this page. If you keep using Matte after that, the new terms apply.

The law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales can deal with any dispute. If you live elsewhere in the UK or in the EU, you keep any rights your local law gives you.
