Two Circles
The Studio Nine mark is two circles: one for the thinking, one for the making. We spend our days putting other people’s marks on screens, so we put ours on paper the slow way, with a local screen printer. Two colours, pulled by hand, no two prints quite alike.
A studio should be able to hold its own mark in its hands. A logo that only exists as pixels is easy to stop seeing. Put one on the wall and you look at it every day.
Two circles is about the simplest mark a studio can have, which makes it hard to hide behind. On screen it is exact, yet a little cold. Every edge is perfect, and nothing about it tells you a person made it.
Screen printing, by contrast, puts the person back. The printer pushes each colour through a fine mesh with a squeegee, one sheet at a time, and the ink never sits quite the same way twice. The second colour lands a hair differently on every pull. That drift is the part we like.
We printed it on G.F Smith Colorplan, a heavy 270gsm coloured stock, and timed it with the launch of the new Agency site in August. It is an open edition printed in small numbered batches, so there will be more, but never many at once.
It is the smallest project in the Lab and the one that explains the rest. The Agency is mostly thinking. The Lab, meanwhile, is where we make things. Two circles.
